Istria is the biggest Croatian peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The peninsula is located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Bay of Kvarner.

Istria, as the most developed Croatian tourism region of Croatia can accommodate more than 200,000 visitors a day in its hotels, apartment villages, campsites or in private accommodation.

The region lies mostly in Istria county of western Croatia. Important towns in Croatian Istria include Pula, Poreč, Rovinj, Pazin, Labin, Motovun, Buzet and Buje, as well as smaller towns of Višnjan, Roc, and Hum, the smallest town in the world. A small slice in the north, including the coastal towns of Piran (Pirano), Portorož and Koper lies in Slovenia, and a tiny region encompassing the town of Muggia (Slovenian Milje) belongs to Italy.

The larger geographical features of Istria include the Učka (Monte Maggiore) mountain in the east, the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinčica and Rasa, and the Lim bay.

The best-protected Istrian harbor is Pula. The narrow bay cuts 4 km inland. The westernmost structure in Istria (therefore Croatia) is the lighthouse in Savudrija. That is the largest lighthouse in Istria, 36 m high, built in 1818. Together with its numerous bays, peninsulas and islands the Istrian coastline is 537 km long. Owing to its indentedness and large number of islands, the length of the west coast is 327 km, whereas the total length of the east coast is 212km.

The largest naturist center in both Istria and Europe is Koversada near Vrsar, with a daily capacity of 12,000 tourists.

The average air temperature during the coldest month (February) is 6C and during the warmest period (July) is 23C. The average annual temperature is 14C.

The lowest average sea temperature is 9C and the highest is 24C.
