Lopud is located 7,5 NM from Dubrovnik and getting there takes about one hour by ferryboat, or thirty minutes by speedboat. There are up to 12 lines daily, operated by the public company Jadrolinija and privately owned Nova International. The number of daily connections increases during the summer season.
Ferries depart from Gruz harbour in Dubrovnik and stop first at Kolocep (another Elaphiti island), after which they cruise to nearby Lopud.
Lopud is the second largest island of the Elafiti group of islands, located northwest of the world heritage town of Dubrovnik, with a town of the same name, between the islands of Kolocep and Sipan. This most developed island of the Elafiti is often called Insula Media, which is Latin for the middle island. It has an area of 4.63km, with a residential population of 110.
Two parallel hills are connected by a dolomite valley with the Lopud bay on one end and the Sunj bay on the opposite. The northeast part of the island is inaccessible as it is very steep. Of the island's 11.5 km of coastline 1.2 km are sandy beaches. The highest peak on the island is Polacica, which is 216m high.
The popular Cove of Sunj beach at the a one km walk through the heart of the island and an intriguing cemetery for history enthusiasts, is overlooked by the Church of Our Lady of Sunj, with a cemetery (also with a fine collection of works of art).
The small island of Sveti Mihajlo (St. Michael) is situated to the northwest of the island.
Šipan also Sipano is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands, 17 km northwest of Dubrovnik, Croatia; separated from the mainland coast by the Koločepski Channel; area 16.5 km²; population 500 (length 9.1 km, width up to 2.6 km). It is the largest island in this group and its highest point is 243 m. Two limestone crests, the higher (Velji Vrh, 243 m) in the northeast and the lower in the southeast surround a dolomite depression, on which olives, figs, vine, carob-trees, almond-trees, oranges and citrus fruit are cultivated. There are two ports on the island, Suđurađ (San Giorgio) in the east, and Šipanska Luka (Porto Gippana) in the west. The island is also famed for the numerous palm tree species that grow on the island.
The island of Koločep is one of the three inhabited Elaphiti Islands situated near the city of Dubrovnik. Koločep is the southernmost inhabited island in Croatia.
The island of Koločep lies at a distance of 1 km from the closest point on the mainland and about the same distance from the peninsula of Lapad, further east towards the city of Dubrovnik itself. The port of Dubrovnik, ( “Gruž” ) is situated at the base of a bay on the other side of Lapad, requiring a 5 km journey by boat to the island. The island can be reached by regular ferry service “Jadrolinija” – the “Postira” and 'Premuda' services connect the Elafiti Islands several times throughout the day. It is a 20 minute boat ride from one port to the other (Dubrovnik–Koločep) by ferry, or 10 minutes by water-taxi. |
